CERTAIN WOMEN (2016)
10/18/2016 - Certain Women (2016) - 4+/10
Usually the small, indie-sensibility tonal thought piece I recognize and appreciate. This one, I did not. I saw the craft, the dictation of people/places/land/society Reichardt is adept at focusing on, and subtlety at play within these small tales. The problem was: it was boring. The acting was solid and finely shot, with proper highlights and focus, but the stories were uninteresting snippets that didn't go anywhere, have overt distinguishable purpose, or really connect in any tangible way.
I like Reichardt's work. I think she can produce tremendous beauty and capture nigh ineffable meaning in the smallest & most personal stories. But this was a languid and laborious snooze fest, possessing a sense of spirit and a spark of natural splendor, but giving the audience no reason to care. I wanted and expected to like it, but it gave me nothing but disappointment.
