SPY (2015)

March 07, 2016 by Jacob Nelson in 2015, 4, ACTION, COMEDY, S, SPY

3/7/2016 - Spy (2015) - 4+/10

I just don't think the McCarthy/Feig comedies are for me. Bridesmaids was just "ok", "The Heat" looked horrid, and this didn't do much for me. I did not find it excelled at much of anything, except testing my patience.

Yes, I understand it's raison d'etre; its against type satirical examination of the spy action movie. Yes, McCarthy (a woman) was the unexpected protagonist and does what the men could not, all while being bawdy and over-the-top. Oh, I get all of that and appreciate what it was presenting, but I just didn't enjoy it. The gags were boorish, the foul mouthed japes smile-worthy at best, and the plot dismissible. Being raunchy and ridiculous without the proper panache leaves me unmoved; no matter if you are Kevin Hart in whatever crappy team-up movie of the month he has, the latest Hangover-esque "ha-ha" failure, or the gritty gals being grosser/harder/keeper than the boys flick.

Many of the performances play off of their predetermined type and they do a decent job. I did like the basic idea of it, giving us something fresh, but it's farcical nature pushed it over-the-edge. I am a hater, I know, but I just didn't find the greatness that so many seemed to derived. Hell, I couldn't even see the "good" or "average". It almost made it there, but I just did not like it that much. (Topical note: gives me even less hope for Ghostbusters. Boo.)
