What to say about this film? It seemed so odd that Michael Showalter, a very funny guy with a killer sense of humor & timing, facilitates this limp Lifetime-on the big screen journey through Tammy Faye Bakker’s life. Maybe that’s the joke?
There isn’t much to sink one’s teeth into with this one. Workmanlike in every respect, and while I guess Jessica Chastain and the makeup department were pulling double their weight, I didn’t have a good feel on who the real woman was, what she sounded like, or what she meant, so this didn’t connect on a level that I think it might have for an older generation. I think Chastain does a good job, but I can’t say that I was enamored with or interested in this nigh-cartoon character of a religious figure. Similar with Garfield, whom I can’t see anyone running out to see in this .
Honestly, a polite wave goes to Jessica, but feel free to skip this. You would be just fine.
