BOMBSHELL (2019)
1/5/20 - Bombshell (2019) - 6+/10
An all-star cast blasting out a gargantuan issue of our time with clarity, palpability, and talent. It wasn’t interested in the politics or fluffing up an angle (though it does have some humorous jabs), but in vile sexist practices and those it hurt. And it achieved its aims in a much stronger and pleasurable way than I had anticipated.
This cast was so potent and compelling. Theron was fantastic and so realistic in her role. The ability to capture the essence of the real Megyn Kelly, while extruding that passion despite her stoic demeanor. I was impressed. Kidman was strong, while Robbie excelled with the bombastic blow-away scenes she was given. I would also point to Lithgow, who was able to retain his likability while being the center of torrid toxicity.
This film proved to be better than I anticipated. Though occasionally a little like Sorkin/Big Short-lite, it can’t quite hit the peaks of those, but it had the drive and the precision of those analogous pillars. Its purpose and tragedy are worthy and paramount, while being the sparkling acted and decently enough put together.
