CAN YOU EVER FORGIVE ME? (2018)
1/29/19 - Can You Ever Forgive Me? (2018) -7+/10
Sardonic wit doesn’t mask the malevolent melancholy, but despite its souring roll around the palette it remains heartfelt and funny. It took me a little while slot in, but it did grip me. It aims well and hits its mark time after time, in design and execution. A really tight and enjoyable flick.
McCarthy is at her emotional best. She was so strong as an insufferable git. Grant was marvelous as well, bringing a likable sadness but with real passion and lived-in-ness; an empathetic style of the damned. Truly strong and resonating work from both of them. Characters and performances that live in the memory.
The script was laid out quite well. Weaving this sordid tale while being intelligent and bullish. There is a knowing sadness and a clever sense of humor that permeates but doesn’t overbear. It felt like this came from the page and was reinforced by the direction. I applaud both.
I didn’t feel like CYEFM is a blow-away smash or frolicking romp, but it is coldly wonderful and quite good. One to check out if it comes your way.
