THE QUIET GIRL (2022)
2/19/23 - The Quiet Girl (2022) - 6+/10
Well, it wasn’t just a clever title. This is a “quiet” and subtle film, with the ambience and rigid internal solitude of the characters made manifest in every solemn sitting for a meal or whispered farm chore. A young girl who is misunderstood and unwanted finds peace, purpose, and preference in the care of relatives for a summer.
While steady, tempered, and adulant, it is understated to a fault. It’s innuendo and murmurs, repeated frames and read into moments. It is well done and little Catherine Clinch is endearing in her performance, but I just could have used more umph all around.
