BLOOD RED SKY (2021)

7/24/21 - Blood Red Sky (2021) - 6-/10

A fun, well cast, and pathos permeated tale of vampires on a plane. It sounds stupid, but it pushes to be as logical and thoroughly thought out as one could hope. The solid and underused cast nail their roles and pulls the engagement easily along, nailing the drama and the action.

I think the plan of both the protagonists and antagonists are shrewd and prudent. It leaves a lot open to interpretation and paints with flourishes that allows the audience’s mind to fill in the blanks, being both topical and threatening.

Peri Baumeister is quite efficient, especially in all of her makeup, being very emotive and expressive. She is the core of the film as a person, letting the humanity of the story battle the monstrous. Purcell brings bass, Rolland is underutilized but I am a mark for him and am always up to bat, and Alexander Scheer was surprisingly adept and quality. He felt like a star in the making.

Sure, it is a bit much, but I thoroughly enjoyed this more caring vampire tale - it lacked the horror of vaguely similar concepts (zombies on a train - Train to Busan), but it was meant more to thrill, provide attachment and generate action. The story works, the drama is well laid out, and the internal “monster vs. (wo)man” really paid off. I liked it.
