4/21/20 - In Fabric (2019) - 6+/7-

Such a fascinating take on what one might consider a scary movie. It’s a ridiculous 80’s horror shlock concept, done with class and intention. But, there is a distinct subversive air of the bizarre and “other universe” to it (it knowingly uses comedians for these Brazil/Office Space interactions), the inscrutable and distinctly otherness of the Wiccan retail establishment, the interactions are so idiosyncratic.

An off putting sensuality mixed with a body horror hint. There is an inert but insidious sex running through its length, highlighted in the uniquely sexed mannequin horror, though it may also have the ‘hottest’ mannequin scene of all time. Such utter imagination in the world and its people. It is uniquely disconcerting and grotesquely humorous.

Language is its own tool in this intriguing and enigmatic sideshow. Meant for discomfort or humor, it is always foreboding. Transcendent. Confounding. Rapturous. Vexing.

This is its own genre. Loosely based on a horror film premise, but the tension isn’t usually of a scary variety, but interpersonal socialization and the perplexity of the world. It doesn’t mean to explain, but only pique, curiosity and consequence. It lacks a bit in coherence and tone, preferring pastiche and playfulness, which holds it back a smidge. Nonetheless, another gem from the masterful jeweler who gave us the glorious Duke of Burgundy.
