6/15/20 - A Serial Killer’s Guide to Life (2020) - 3+/10
Thelma and Louise by way of Fight Club, with the lightest dusting of a God Save America sprinkled on top. Premise-wise, it is solid, but a premise alone a good film does it not make. The thing that this one lacked, as opposed to those other long-standing and well regarded flicks, is enjoyment, intrigue, characters, humor, excitement and story (beyond a sentence). For an 80 min. Feature, this dragged and left the viewer completely unfulfilled. Like the antithesis of the film, one watches this and questions “what am I doing with my time?’”
The main character is so infantile and disconnected from normal human interaction. Even injecting a more “normal” character into her life completely subsumes her. I feel like if there could have been a love interest or actual human friend to provide some alternate pull, there might have been a juxtaposition of her desires and a fulfillment of the character’s synthesis. Here, it becomes more of a dull ‘switch being flicked’. It provides nothing to complete and fulfill.
