DOLEMITE IS MY NAME (2019)
11/1/19 - Dolemite Is My Name (2019) - 7/10
Perhaps the most outright fun time I have had in the theater this year (and I am so glad I saw it on the big screen). Uproariously funny while being earnest and poignant. It knew to be humorous and sympathetic, all while never taking itself too seriously. It provided purpose, and representation, and an uplifting message, all while crudely swimming in the absurdity. The brilliant and profound examination of the journey from nothing to screen legend- telling the story so perfectly. It was exactly what the Disaster Artist hoped to be but couldn’t achieve.
Murphy and Snipes were revelations. Both immaculately played their roles, with so much nuance and such talent that is so often hindered by artifice or arduous content. Murphy deserves all the recognition and good will that Dolemite can provide him.
This is a tremendously enjoyable film that skirts sap or the overblown. It speeds to a strong finish in its proper lane, loving mimicry and heartfelt idolology.
