BONE TOMAHAWK (2015)
5/9/2017 - Bone Tomahawk (2015) – 5+/6-/10
Harsh, barbarous, and not entirely pleasant but fully satisfying. This small, brutish, and slowly-amping thrill ride played out over the vast planes-filled carcass of the Old West (topically and genre-wise) scratched a particular itch. So hard that it drew blood, but sometimes hard is the best.
The violence is more akin to modern torture-porney gore fests and is downright gastric in its affect, but pairing it with the slow thrill of a Western worked. At least to a point. The ample presence of a mustachioed Kurt Russell distinguishes it with an innate likability and resonance. Throw in some other fine acting (Wilson, Jenkins and Fox) and they drive a sparse story towards its inevitably grizzly end.
For a select audience for certain, but detestably amiable if you fit the bill.
