It wants to be Zombieland meets A Boy and His Dog and Monsters, but I found the main character so unavoidably unlikable as this bumbling loser. It’s a situation of “how could this person possibly survive the apocalypse?”, which mostly just lets my eyes roll. The dialogue is numbing and I just want him to die.
The side characters definitely help. Love the dog, but sad that he has attached himself to Mr. Loser. Michael Rooker plays Michael Rooker in everything he is in now, which is fine. Minnow is too advanced dialogue wise but Ariana Greenblatt’s acting is solid.
I greatly appreciated that the “love story” played out somewhat like I hoped. Mr. Loser deserved it. It’s the only real logical element and does some heavy lifting to perk up my opinion of the totality.
The vfx were not extraordinarily special. Perhaps the last giant creature was strong in all its midday glory, but in general, they were technically fine but lacked realism.
It was annoying and I wanted the main character to parish, but it was fairly watchable and unassuming all said.
