HARPOON (2019)

4/16/20 - Harpoon (2019) - 4+/10

It was actually kind of engaging despite being unfunny, overwrought, and flimsy. There was way too much suspension of disbelief and too many “twists”. That all said, its a gruesome dissolving of relationships, both tangibly and metaphorically, and provides a dark little 3-hander on the high seas. Full of twists and dire claustrophobia, both in location and in situation, but it pushes too hard and often can’t get out of its own way.

Emily Tyra was good, providing a terrific emotional base for the other two actors to bounce off of. Unfortunately,  they were often overzealous and lacked believability, which kind of derails investment in the sickly twisted plot. The character’s motivations and actions strained credulity, which was another anchor holding this vessel from sailing along.

I mean the whole thing is wildly “WTF?!”, but conceptually it was vaguely interesting. The ending prompted heavy eye-rolling and a chuckle but the best part of the film is the icing on the script cake; the Life of Pi/Richard Parker anecdotes were legitimately fun and appreciated. I’m not sure how much of the rest of it really sticks with you.
