2019 OSCAR DOCUMENTARY SHORTS
2/10/2019 - 2019 Oscar Animated Shorts - Documentary
My Pick: Period. End of Sentence.
Oscar Probable: Black Sheep
Period. End of Sentence. (2018) - 7+/10 - The closest thing to a “feel good” story in this line-up of short docs. The level of societal ignorance is stammering, but seeing a stand and hope is lifting. There was a smart blend of pointed informing with a sly humor while depicting the depressing experiences of women in India. But, there were some strong stories about a future that really brought up this tale. It was well shot, smartly edited, and satisfactorily detailed.

Black Sheep (2018)- 7+/10 - A trying peak into the mental dysfunction that vile racism breeds. An interesting almost meta narrative with the older version of himself watching his younger events play out like a ghost of the past. A fine blend of recreation and testimonial. There was such intensity that poured out with the continual close-ups; a passion and pain. A strong film, but it could have used more time and furthering.

End Game (2018) - 7+/10 - Touching and thoughtful. An upfront and exposed experience with the terminality of the human experience. Quite personal and well-intentioned, delivering on those intentions and those oh-so personal moments. The filmmaker’s timing was fortuitous to capture the bittersweet endings.

Lifeboat (2018) - 6+/10 - Well crafted. Great editing, with the pacing and varied stories, exposing the frailty of the human condition. Too big and powerful not to click with the audience; the tragedies laid bare.
