BASKIN (2015)
10/10/2016 - Baskin (2015) 4+/5-/10
A tad sloppy in story, but the dreaminess is allowed to explain this. Thankfully, what this movie has that stands it out is its weirdness and its willingness to hang it out there without explaining it. There are no answers and few conclusions. The mystery is appreciated and makes the creepy horror feel earned and sustaining.
Scary it is not, but the cultural differences paired with the Lynchian-lite nightmarescape/reality fusion instills an enigmatic fog that the characters & audience are shuffling through to grasp at truth. Thankfully, there is none, and despite a strange horror cliche end-cap, the film is a subjective "fill in the blank", which I like.
I also have to touch on the crux of the nightmare. That "group" is an outstanding collection of weirdos and a jarringly palpable depiction of a sadistic otherworldly cadre. Their writhing odd quandary is only matched by their deathly intense vision.
It lacks in story and thrust, and though properly strange, lacks polish. There were some captivating camera angles/shots, but generally lackluster acting and questionable narrative structure.
Overall all, it's is strikingly strange in a standard of ordinary. If a group of cops dreamily wandered into and quixotically tried to escape a Lovecraftian "Hills Have Eyes" meets "Event Horizon".
